Fish consumption preferences are shaped by a complex interplay of socioeconomic and cultural factors. This study aims to assess the frequency of fish consumption, analyze the socioeconomic characteristics of consumers and their preferences, and identify key factors influencing fish consumption patterns. A field survey conducted from March to May involved 60 purposively selected respondents from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds in Biratnagar Metropolitan City. Findings revealed that 33.33% of respondents consumed fish once a fortnight, with Rohu (Labeo rohita) and Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) being the most preferred species. Consumption patterns varied significantly by age, gender, ethnicity, education, and income, with older individuals, males, and higher-income groups consuming fish more frequently. Barriers such as high prices, unhygienic market conditions, and seasonal variations disproportionately affected lower-income groups. Traditional markets were the primary source of fish, emphasizing affordability and cultural preferences. Addressing challenges through targeted interventions, including improved market infrastructure, consumer education, and year-round availability, could enhance fish consumption. These findings align with existing literature, highlighting the need for policies promoting dietary diversity and nutritional security across socioeconomic groups.
