Biopesticides are fundamentally pest control agents derived from natural sources, with these including microbes, plants, and biochemical sources. They provide reduced toxicity with the same pest control efficacy as synthetic pesticides, with the added benefit of specificity to the target pest. Some of the more commonly known types of biopesticides include microbial biopesticides, botanical biopesticides, and semiochemicals. Biopesticides are important components of sustainable agriculture and integrated pest management (IPM) systems. Although there are many benefits associated with biopesticides, there are limitations such as shorter shelf life, lesser field efficacy, and delayed adoption of biopesticides. Future research needs to increase awareness of biopesticides for improved use in modern agriculture.
