Urban horticulture is a key component in fostering sustainability in rapidly growing Urban settings. Food security, environmental quality, and community well-being are seriously threatened by growing urbanization and population expansion. These demands are met by urban horticulture, which offers easily accessible produce that is grown nearby, improves green spaces, and encourages a stronger bond between humans and the natural world. Urban horticulture has a lot of potential, but it also faces a lot of obstacles, like appropriate plant selection for urban horticulture, nutrient recycling, diversification of urban vegetation and so on. It will take creative thinking and well-rounded solutions to overcome these challenges. Aeroponics, Hydroponics, Aquaponics, Microgreens, Community garden, Rooftop farming, Automation and the Internet of Things and Vertical farming are a few of the techniques that are revolutionizing urban farming. In addition to addressing the issue of urban horticulture, these programs promote employment creation, education, and community involvement, all of which support sustainable urban development. These patterns indicate a move toward urban horticultural techniques that are more effective, resource-conscious, and ecologically benign. Urban horticulture provides a route towards building resilient, energetic, and ecologically conscious cities for future generations by tackling obstacles, seizing opportunities, and embracing new trends. This review summarizes need for urban horticulture, hurdles and difficulties, prospects and new trends in Urban horticulture system commencing with general information on Urban horticulture. It emphasizes on the importance of urban horticulture, combined with new technologies, in meeting the needs of people in urban settings, for safeguarding community livelihoods, food security, and the environment. Additionally, the review aims to discuss in detail the modern cropping systems that can be easily adopted in growing agricultural commodities in urban dwellings for sustainable food supply in the future.
